"So who are Gingerbreads Out of School Care?"
Gingerbreads opened it's doors in September 2016 in Downham Market after extensive market research showed a significant lack of after school childcare in the area.
"My family and I were planning to move to the area and there was nothing on offer in the way of after school childcare which I needed in order to work"
This got me thinking - "I could set up something. It would not only provide me with a career but it would help others in the community who struggle with childcare after school and also allow people the option to consider work, study or just take time for themselves"
"My work & childcare problems solved! Voila!"
Sounds simple ey? "I wouldn't go that far"..... Gingerbreads was in the making a good year before it opened. "We were living in Lancashire and so the business was set up remotely"
Juggling a childminding business, running a family and setting up a new business was no mean feat for Jo, Director and Manager of Gingerbreads.
"I knew the process having been a childminder for 2 years previously and spent over 20 years working in the childcare sector"
"So after several meetings, trips up & down the country, endless paperwork and an Ofsted registration visit, we were all systems go & ready to take bookings!" Gingerbreads was born! :-)

"What will Gingerbreads offer my child?"

We ensure your child is well looked after whilst at Gingerbreads. We provide healthy snacks, drinks and a meal at tea time for your child during the session. We promote independence by encouraging children to prepare snacks and food where appropriate, and to clear away after themselves. Meals are balanced, nutritious and follow statutory guidelines. We meet individual dietary requirements.

We are regulated by environmental health and have received a '5' rating at our last inspection.

Menu's are served on a 2 weekly rota. Here is an example menu planner for meals.

"Can my child and I visit the club to look around?"

Absolutely! We are open every day from 3pm til 6pm so feel free to pop in if you are passing. If you'd rather pre book a visit though, please get in touch and we shall be happy to arrange a convenient time for you and your child to visit. During your visit you and your child will be able to meet the staff and children, see the play environment and join in with any activities or games they wish. All registration information will be given along with details of fees, plus any other information you request. The duration of your visit can be as long as you and your child want it to be. You can chose to register on the day subject to availability of days or at another time. The choice is yours.....

If you would like to 'try before you buy', we offer a free, no obligation trial session for your child.  Just complete the registration form beforehand and book your day!

"How do I register my child?"

If you wish to register your child for a place at Gingerbreads, you will need to complete a registration pack and pay a registration fee & deposit. Please see the fees page for more details. You can pick up a registration pack from the club or you can download one from the website. Just click on the button below. Please check that your required days are available prior to registering your child to avoid disappointment.

Your deposit is held by the club and returned to you when you decide to end your contract with us. A start date for your child will be agreed with you upon registration and your child will be added to the registers. We take particular care of new children when they start to ensure they are happy and settled, showing them around and where to find things.

Fact: The Downham Market Town Hall was built in 1887/8 with local white brick and carrstone. Carrstone was quarried in the town and many houses were built of this stone. The use of this distinctive stone led to Downham being referred to, at one time, as the "Gingerbread Town" - Gingerbreads!

"My child doesn't yet attend school - can they attend Gingerbreads?"

We do take children below school age however we do need to assess the needs of all children and ensure safety of children at all times.

We can collect from Nelson Academy nursery, Clackclose Preschool & Downham nursery.

Take a look at our 'accepting pre school children' policy. This outlines in detail how we assess a child's suitability to the club.

If you think your child meets the criteria to be able to attend the club please contact us to arrange for you and your child to visit.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old. All schools and Ofsted-registered early years providers must follow the EYFS. This includes after school and holiday clubs, however certain requirements are more relaxed in these childcare establishments.

If your child is in pre-school or in reception at school they will follow the EYFS curriculum. Speak to our staff to find out how we support the EYFS and what this means for your child.

" Thank you so much for providing a fantastic resource to the town. Eva has thoroughly enjoyed herself and she has been made so welcome."
" She has the freedom to play and engage in lots of lovely activities. Thank you so much."
Elaine Edgson - mum to Eva
